William (40 year) - Nationality: American - September 12, 2000

"I started smoking when I was 16 years old... just to be cool with my "friends". I smoked through college, and when in my thirties, I had a routine chest x-ray which showed advanced emphysema. I was shocked, because I was not out of breath or having any health problems... so I kept on smoking. Now, I have bronchitis several times a year and the emphysema, of course. Its getting worse. A pulmonary specialist told me I wouldn't live to see 50 if I didn't stop smoking. That was three years ago and I still smoke. I can't stop. I've been patched, gummed, hypnotized, stuck with pins. Nothing works and I really want to quit. The times I have tried to quit, I feel better even just one day off the cigarettes. Please, do not even pick up that first cigarette. Those friends I was so eager to impress? Well, I haven't seen them in over 20 years. Good luck if you're trying to quit. It's the hardest thing in the world to do!"
