Eduardo (64 year) - Nationality: Chilean - September 12, 2000

"I tried several times (at least 5) to stop smoking by myself. I was able to stop smoking for a few days only, but always started again. Finally I decided to get professional help, registering in a quit-smoking program. With the aid of Wellbutrin and nicotine patches, I was able to quit smoking. As of today, I don't use nicotine patches nor take Wellbutrin and have not smoked again. Every time I quit smoking in the past, I restarted smoking by smoking just one cigarette. In every case, my thought was "I will smoke only this cigarette and then will not smoke again". The program I followed convinced me of two things: I am a nicotine addict and always will be one, whether I smoke or not. The addiction will never go away. If I smoke just one cigarette, I will not be able to stop, exactly as an alcoholic can not stop drinking after the first drink. An alcoholic will never be again a social drinker; an ex- smoker will never be again a social smoker. The only way to stop smoking and remain an ex-smoker forever is to never ever smoke again, not even one cigarette."
