Politics and the tobacco industry:

Lynn (57 year) - Nationality: American - September 12, 2000

"I have tried to quit smoking for nearly 40 years. I finally quit on March 5, 2000 and I presently have 6 months toward this quit. I have used the QuitNet on the Internet and have found it very helpful, providing information, education, support and new friends. I used the nicotine replacement several times. More than once, I was afraid that I actually was hooked on it. I have been off nicotine replacement therapy for 2 months now. I have had weight gain, but I am going to a counsellor and seeking help on my addiction to sugar and other carbohydrates. I wish that I had never started smoking, but I did it, because I was rebellious and I was told to never smoke. It was a big mistake. If I had all the money, I have spent on cigarettes over the 40 years, I would own my own home and have a nice lifestyle. I believe it is an addiction to nicotine. I viewed the movie "The Insider" and found it appalling that the tobacco industry in the United States is able to get away with murder. I was very disconcerted that George Bush took donations for his campaign from the tobacco industry. I was impressed that Al Gore did not. I think that the world in which we live corrupts our children and that smoking is very very detrimental. I can't believe how many women I know and who smoked during their pregnancy gave birth to children with disabilities. I wasn't able to smoke during pregnancy, because it made me violently ill. It's a tough world and I shake my head every time I see a young person smoking. They don't have a clue what they are doing."
